Journey to the heart of Savoy
In season, discover another slide: Ski Joering.

In season, discover another slide: Ski Joering.

The origins of ski joëring go back to 2500 years before Christ, when we find the first traces in Scandinavia of Shörekjöring, ancestor of skijoering, which at the time was only a means of locomotion. At the start, this activity was practiced by peasants who combined a need for work, travel or leisure with the horse or the dog and skiing.

Initially a means of transport, ski joëring will evolve towards pleasure and competition. The Swiss have, among other things, developed this discipline at the beginning of the 20th century for tourism and competition purposes, the most famous of which are the St. Moritz races.

At the end of the 19th century, forgotten winter equestrian disciplines reappeared locally. In France, the winter use of the horse disappeared completely after the Second World War and reappeared in the late 1990s.

Some centers offer this activity, notably the Mont-Blanc Equestrian Center in Les Houches.

The famous little rack train, departing from Chamonix, takes you to the Montenvers site located at 1913 m. A magnificent panorama of the Mer de Glace glacier, the Drus and the Grandes Jorasses.

ICE CAVE
On site, the visit to the ice cave is a trip to the heart of the glacier, re-cut each year, it describes the life of mountain dwellers at the beginning of the 19th century. It is accessible either by a footpath, around 20 minutes on foot, or by cable car: be careful, about 550 steps separate the arrival of the cable car from the entrance to the cave.

THE GLACIORIUM
True witness to the climatic changes of our century, the Montenvers site deserved a space dedicated to glaciology! The Mer de Glace, its formation, its history, its future developments, this is what you can discover by visiting this interactive and educational place…
