The Belém district

The Belém district

Far from the historic center, Belém is a picturesque district to the west of Lisbon. It's Lisbon's old commercial port, from where caravels set sail in the 15th century to make great discoveries. The great Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama, for example, set sail for the Indies.
Today, this district boasts a number of historic monuments worth discovering. These include the Belem Tower, the Hyéronymites Monastery and the Monument to the Discoveries.

Culture lovers will also find a number of museums and the Belém Cultural Center. Gourmets, on the other hand, will be more interested in the famous "Pastéis de Belém" patisserie, the origin of the traditional Portuguese tart. The establishment's reputation is easily recognized by the long queue that is constantly in front of it.
Built on the banks of the Tagus, Belém is also a great place to stroll along the river and enjoy a drink on the terrace beside it.

RESTAURANT PONTO FINAL

A short lunch break in this "end of the world" spot, at the end of a pontoon: a waterside restaurant that lives up to its name. On the menu: shark soup (sopa de cação), delicious fresh fish of the day simply grilled and drizzled with olive oil, or cooked with rice (arroz de tamboril), the famous seafood rice (arroz de marisco) and a few roasted meat specialties such as oven-roasted goat (cabrito assado no forno).

LE COUVENT DE CARME is a building that can be seen from many parts of Lisbon, but has never been rebuilt. The ruins of this Gothic church bear witness to the violence of the 1755 earthquake that destroyed the capital: an authentic open-air museum...
